Building the potential of your Out Of School provision

 Strategic Improvement Visits, sometimes called Core Visits by schools, are undertaken by an Out Of School Advisor, who helps maximise the potential of your Out Of School provision for all children you care for, including those funded through pupil premium.

These visits can be purchased for your breakfast club, after school provision, lunchtime provision or holiday play scheme and are tailored to your specific needs.

Strategic Improvement Visits can include:

  •  support to set up new provision,

  • audit tools to help you evaluate the quality of your provision, for example, School Aged Children Environmental Rating Scale (SACERS),

  • support with policies and procedures, and

  • undertaking joint observations to support you to assess and develop the quality of your provision.


This the learning journey that Southborough School undertook with Threads of Success recently:

"After meeting at the Out Of School Club Conference and feeling inspired, we requested an Out Of School Improvement Adviser  come to our school to carry out an audit in our After School Club, SB Stars. The Adviser booked us in and carried out a full School Age Children Environmental Rating Scale  (SACERS) audit."

"She observed the setting up, running and management of our provision and wrote a through report. She came back to meet with the manager and explained the strengths of our provision and areas to develop. With these development points, she created a manageable and targeted action plan which allowed us to address our weaker areas. Our children now benefit from a more creative, thought-out and child-centred provision which encourages independence and mutual support. The Advisor was entirely undisruptive to the running of our session, and she provided feedback in a positive and supportive manner. I would have no concerns in recommending the Threads of Success service , and in fact hope the same Advisor will return in the near future to carry out a further audit to assess how much progress has been made."

Also, we have developed some new and exciting training packages (launching soon) which will contribute to the current government agendas on developing children’s resilience in both physical and mental health.  These are:

  • Be Active - which has been developed in consultation with the British Heart Foundation and includes a free pack of resources for the first 100 schools and settings to book the training.

  • An Introduction to Forest School – which supports the development of this approach in Out Of School provision.

  • Loose Parts – which supports children’s creativity and problem solving through the provision of a wide range of materials and is based on Simon Nicholson’s theory of loose parts.
