Outline

The Makaton Foundation Workshop is designed for professionals needing to learn Makaton for use in their work. It provides a detailed introduction to Makaton and combines a practical approach together with underpinning theory. The training is interactive and fun.

Lectures cover research into sign and symbol use, symbol design themes, the use and purpose of Makaton and an overview of alternative systems of communication. You will learn the signs and symbols for Stages 1-4 of the Core Vocabulary, plus Additional Vocabulary

Outcomes:

On completion of the Foundation Workshop, participants should:

  • know about the history, design and structure of the Makaton Core and Resource Vocabularies

  • be able to use signs and symbols from Stages 1, 2, 3, 4 and the Additional Vocabulary in their daily environment, and use techniques for placement, directionality and movement

  • know how the signs used with the Makaton Vocabulary are derived and be able to support their use with reference to appropriate research

  • understand the Makaton symbols design themes, and begin to feel confident to draw them by hand and use them in a variety of other ways with and without signs to suit users’ needs

  • have a knowledge of the different approaches available to develop the communication skills of a wide range of Makaton users

  • be informed about the other Makaton Training Courses and Workshops and associated Resource Materials

Two full days

Delivery Options

Two day course either accessible as an individual through CPD Online or as a whole group training for your setting.   

Study materials

You will receive 4 workshop manuals, Pocket Book of Signs 1 and Pocket Book of Symbols 1. Your  certificate of attendance will be signed off by the tutor at the end of each module.  Please remember to keep your Foundation Workshop certificate in case you want to attend further Makaton training.
